Why I am not on the foreign mission field
Last night, my husband and I were watching TV, when out of the corner of my eye I spotted something moving on the wall. I turn and see a HUGE roach, the size of my middle finger, making its way across the wall. I immediately start yelling to Ben to kill it. Unfortunately, it didn't come out that coherently and by the time Ben realized what I was talking about, the roach had made its way to the top of our futon. Because it was on an uneven surface, it made for an awkward kill so when Ben hit it, it fell between the cracks out of sight. Now, if you don't know this already, roaches are sneaky little critters (that is partly why I hate them so much, plus the fact that they are so fast, ugly, and multiple like crazy). We had no idea where it went. There was no way that I was going to be able to sleep knowing that a big mama roach was in my house somewhere. And I made sure to let Ben know that! So, he spent the next half hour turning the room upside time in search of the nasty little sucker. When he was about to give up, and I resigned myself to the fact that I would never go in that room again, he spotted the cockroach hiding between some tapes, just waiting patiently for us to forget about him. So he is dead now, and I was able to rest easy. But if I ever see another one, we are getting an exterminator!
Ugh, I don't want to think about it anymore, so here are some happy photos of Jaron a couple of weekends ago during his first time in the water. He loved it!

Hey, we just bought that same float for Abigail and Rebekah. They will all have to go swimming together sometimes.
We miss the little sweetie. We'll be home in a couple of days.

Looks like Jaron likes the water! We have friends with a pool on the mountain that I've taken Caleb to, he likes it too, though tries to drink the water! Wanna go swimming together sometime soon? (like when its not 100 out there anymore!)

Yeah, Michelle and Sara, we would love to going swimming! Just let me know when!

Oh, that story about the roach just gave me chills. See, that is exactly why we don't live in Chat-town. The bugs are much smaller in Chicago!
But anyways, Jaron is way too cute. He is getting so big! Hopefully we'll be meeting him soon.

Two possible solutions: (from a google search)
1. Get a Gecko
This might bother some people, but it worked for one of my previous roommates. She had amazing results. Get a gecko (it's a kind of lizard) and let it loose in the house. The natural food chain process kicks in, the gecko eats the roaches and there you have it.
The gecko will most likely start to hang out in the open more as the population of roaches dwindles. When they are gone, keep your gecko in an appropriate tank and feed them crickets daily, which you can purchase at any pet store. Geckos need to eat everyday (unlike snakes that can go prolonged periods without food). As I said, this might bother some people. So, if you don't like lizards, I suggest another approach.
2. Roach Ball Recipe
This worked for me when we lived in an older apartment complex that had been infested for years.
Roach Balls
1 cup borax
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon water
Make a paste of the ingredients and roll the paste into little balls. Place two or three balls into a sandwich-size plastic bag and leave the top open. Place the bag anywhere you have a roach problem. The roaches will eat the balls and carry them away. The bugs die at home, out of sight, and other roaches eat those carcasses and so on. The onion scent draws them in. This recipe makes about 50 balls for about 10 applications. There is one caution. Hide these bags carefully so that children and pets can't get at them.

Are you being serious? Those things really work? I guess I will try plan B (the first idea grosses me out - I'm not much of a reptile person, even though one lizard would be better than millions of roaches) if I ever see another one. But I am hoping it was a one time occurance!

make a note: you never want to live in south florida. a few big ol' roaches were pretty normal, especially in the kitchen at nite. and tiny ants. lots of tiny ants.

I lived in south florida and did not have a Gecko. It was bad. I would get up in the middle of the night and you could just feel them scramble.
