Roaches!!
UGH! I can't believe it. We have roaches. Yuck! If you know me at all, you should know that roaches is one thing that I cannot stand! I don't where they came - they seem to have come out of nowhere. I saw one Sunday night on our coach and I killed it (all by myself because Ben was putting the boy to bed) and was hoping (even though I knew better) that he was the only one. But then yesterday morning I saw another one on the coach and trapped it and had Ben come down from working to kill it for me. Once again I was hoping that those were the only two and that they had been brought in the house and were in something that we had put on our coach. But later that night when we were getting ready for bed, I spotted two more in the bathroom. Then when we went in the kitchen and the refrigerator door was open for Ben to get his nightly glass of water (the lights were off in the kitchen), he saw one crawling up the wall. He killed that one and then saw another crawling nearby into a crack. While I held the refrigerator door open for light, and Ben went to get some spray, I saw two more on the floor. That is when terror struck. My philosophy in life is that when I see 3 or more of something I freak out, because that means that they are everywhere! So we killed all the roaches that we could see and went to bed. This morning I killed 3 more, one escaping to darkness when I turned the kitchen light on, another in the utensil drawer, and another in the lamp shade in the living room. They have taken over my house!!
So I am thoroughly disgusted and feel like I cannot even be comfortable in my own home. So do any of you have any advice for getting rid of this nasty critters? Do any of you have any suggestions about good exterminators. There is one thing that I made very clear to my husband when we were married - that I could not live with roaches. So he knows that I will go to any and all lengths to rid my home of them. So please pass on any helpful advice. Also, does anyone know if there are certain things that may be harmful to me and my baby, since I am pregnant? Is it ok for exterminators to come and spray stuff when there is a pregnant woman in the house? I sure hope not. Cuz if it IS a problem, then they are still going to come by - I will just move in with one of my family members (so go ahead and get your guest rooms ready)!

Our guest room is always ready, but only if you bring "the boy" with you.
I'm so sorry to hear about the roaches. Just hearing your story makes me crazy. I wouldn't have been able to sleep for fear they would be crawling on me or worse - on Jaron.
I hope you can find a way to get rid of them. I have read that if they are the big ones they are probably coming in from outside and don't actually live in your house. At our old house I think they lived in the big trees around our house. Thankfully we haven't seen any here yet. I think they are a common problem in Brainerd though.

Unfortunately, even though the large roaches terrify me a lot more, these are the small roaches. Which I know means that they are working on infesting our house and won't be leaving anytime soon.
I DID have trouble sleeping last night and it took all the strength I had in me to walk through the dark house in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. I would have held it if I could, but being pregnant doesn't allow me to do that very well!
Thanks for the tip, Bob. And I will never live in Florida....

boric acid... powder form...works wonders.
relatively safe around kiddos, in powder form you can use one of those water bottles that they use in old boxing movies (plastic with thin tapered spoute) to blow the dust under baseboards, light sockets, behind cupboards etc.
very inexpensive and it works quite well against the little critters (ants too).

hmmm...this brings back memories of moving Gurney's fridge out of your old St. Elmo avenue house. The image that sticks in my mind is a lot like the goblins in the mines of Moria.
good times.

Seabright boric acid bait and sticky traps work great, along with putting boric acid in cracks and stuff: http://www.seabrightlabs.com/roach.htm

I used roach baits when I lived in Hawaii. I think they are Command brand? There were 18 in a package which worked great in a efficiency apartment!
Another thing: be paranoid about clean kitchen. Don't have any rubbish or dirty dishes or anything overnight, and pour a little bleach down your drains when you're done for the night, so that the little darlings can't come up the drains. Take the trash out every night.
As for the sleeping...I had the same problem. You'll get used to it. Keep praying. The Lord cares about every care of ours, no matter how 'insignificant' they are.

I have been told by a couple of people that one way roaches get into ones house is by paper bags from the grocery store. Apparently they like to nest in them and then come home with you. So it is best to not use paper (use plastic or reuseable bags that you bring) or to get rid of them asap. I don't know if it is true, but I'm not used to the bug populations of the south, so I listen to all advice I can get.
